Why did you choose to apply to Osborne Clarke?
I was already aware of Osborne Clarke before applying for a place on the vacation scheme, due to the firms’ strong presence in the technology sector, advising some very prominent clients. I applied for the vacation scheme as I was confident that I would be given real trainee work, and a valuable insight into life as an Osborne Clarke trainee.
What did you get involved with during your placement?
I sat in the Commercial and Financial Institutions teams and was provided with a broad range of files. This work ranged from reading through standard non-disclosure agreements and modifying them to suit our client, to drafting a provisional hire purchase agreement. In both teams my supervisors took the time to give me an overview of the team, the type of work they did, and most impressively, asked me what I wanted to achieve during my time with them.
Some of my personal highlights from the placement were the assessments. From working as part of a team with other candidates in the group exercise, to having to write succinctly and accurately in the written assessment, we were given lots of support and advice to allow us to perform to the best of our abilities.
Do you have any advice for prospective candidates?
If I were to give one piece of advice to any prospective candidates, it would be to relax and to be yourself, both in the application process and during the scheme itself. Certainly you have to remain professional (as you would in any job), but expressing your personality allows the assessors to see that you will be able to function in a team and communicate with clients – a necessity in the legal world.
