In the spotlight with vac scheme student: Rebecca Ewing

Why did you choose to apply to Osborne Clarke?

I chose to complete a vacation scheme at Osborne Clarke because its Bristol office has a reputation for completing high-level work. As I had completed a year abroad in Hong Kong during my law degree I was also interested in Osborne Clarke’s international presence.

What did you get involved in during your placement?

During my vacation scheme I spent time in the Corporate and Real Estate departments.

In Corporate I gained exposure to every aspect of a corporate transaction. For example, I completed company searches, checked disclosure documents, drafted board minutes and special resolutions.  I also undertook research tasks and drafted client letters. My supervisor’s specialism was in the energy sector and many of the clients I was dealing with were solar companies. This provided a clear example of Osborne Clarke’s sector focus in practice and I enjoyed developing my knowledge of this industry.

In Real Estate I undertook various research tasks and drafted client letters. One of my main tasks was researching whether a prospective development site had sufficient access.  This was really interesting because it required me to consider practical and commercial factors as well as legal ones. I also enjoyed attending a meeting with the tax and finance departments as it showed me that the firm operates as one team across different practice areas when dealing with complex legal transactions.

There were also a wide variety of activities that we could get involved with in addition to the work in our departments. These included CSR activities, visiting the London office, playing in a softball match against a client and attending the firm’s summer party. I really enjoyed being able to meet a range of people from across the firm and get to know the other vacation students.

Throughout my placement I was made to feel welcome and part of the team as well as the wider firm. I found everyone that I met to be very friendly and supportive, and would advise any prospective candidates not to feel anxious and to get involved with everything!
